MEGAWATI-PRABOWO CAMP DEPLORES POSTPONEMENT OF PEACEFUL CAMPAIGN DECLARATION

Jakarta, June 1 (ANTARA) - The camp of the Megawati Soekarnoputri-Prabowo Subianto ticket deplores the General Elections Commission (KPU)'s decision to postpone a function where all presidential candicates would formally vow a peaceful campaigning period.
"The postponement disadvantages the Megawati-Prabowo camp," a member of the pair's advocacy team, Gayus Lumbuun, said here on Monday, adding that he had asked for a clarification from the KPU about the unilateral postponement.

However, he said, he had not received a satisfactory response from the KPU because its chairman, Abdul Hafiz Anshary, was in Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, while other KPU members were not around.

Lumbuun only met with one KPU member, namely Andi Nurpati, but the latter knew nothing about the postponement of the peaceful declaration.

Lumbuun said he would try again to get a clarification from the KPU because according to him there was an indication the postponement was decided in the interest of a certain presidential candidate who was on an overseas trip.

He would also remind KPU not to make sudden schedule changes again because it would worsen the Commission's image.

"Otherwise, the results of the upcoming presidential election will not be legitimate," he said.

Meanwhile, another member of the Mega-Prabowo advocacy team, Mahendradatta, said the KPU's decision to postpone the peaceful declaration was an arrogant act that could not be tolerated.

According to Mahendradatta, the KPU's arrogance could be seen from its decision on the results of the recent legislative elections.

He said the decision was not yet final, although a number of political parties participating in the legislative elections had filed law suits with Constitutional Court.***
