VP: RI TO ACT FIRMLY IF AMBALAT WATERS REALLY TRESPASSED
Jakarta, June 1 (ANTARA) - Vice President M Jusuf Kalla said Indonesia will take firm measures if foreign incursions into national territory in Ambalat waters really happen.
"Concerning Ambalat, we will take stern actions if there really are foreign incursions. If foreigners disturb our country, we are even ready for war with whoever they are," Kalla said in response to press' questions here on Monday.
He said he would check with the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) on how far Indonesian territory in Ambalat waters were trespassed by Malaysian warships recently.
"Is sailing around the area, a violation? We'll see," he said.
Trespassing a country's border area could disturb the country's sovereignty, and therefore it needed to be responded to with firm action, he said.
However, Kalla stated that Indonesia and Malaysia had so far had sound bilateral relations.
"We have good relations with the Malaysian government, and we often visit each other," he said.
The frequent maneuvers by Malaysian warships in Indonesian territory in Amobalat waters in the past few days had prompted Indonesia to step up its sea patrols in the disputed territory.
TNI Chief Gen Djoko Santoso said recently that security in Ambalat waters was being maintained in accordance with maritime standard operation procedures agreed on by Indonesia and Malaysia.
Meanwhile, House of Representatives' Commission-I member Abdillah Toha said here on Monday that the government should speed up the settlement of Indonesia's dispute over the Ambalat Block with Malaysia through intensive diplomacy.
According to the politician from the National Mandate Party (PAN), diplomatic communication to create mutual understanding would yield better results than political communication.
To maintain security and stability in Asia, Abdillah Toha also called on the Malaysian government to stop making maneuvers in the Ambalat area that could increase tensions at the borders.
"If Malaysia really has a problem with Indonesia, it should be discussed in an amicable way without resort to provocative acts," Toha said.***
