MINISTER TO ENCOURAGE USE OF DOMESTIC CONSTRUCTION PRODUCTS

Jakarta, June 1 (ANTARA) - Public Works Minister Djoko Kirmanto has promised to encourage the use of domestic construction products in the country in accordance with Presidential Instruction No. 2/2009 regarding the use of domestic products.

"We have prohibited the use of imported products if the needed goods are available in the country," Kirmanto said here Monday after opening a Gapensi (Indonesian Construction Companies Association) leadership meeting here Monday.

Amid an overseas economic climate that had yet to recover from the impact of the global crisis, Indonesian products including those of the construction sector should be preferred in developing the country, Kirmanto said.

"It is a fact that a number of construction projects are being financed with foreign loans, but in accordance with the presidential instruction the construction equipment and materials used in those projects must be locally produced," the minister said.

Citing an example of an Indonesian product in the construction sector, the minister mentioned the "chicken claw" construction technology invented by Indonesian engineers which was not second in effectiveness to foreign construction technology.

"The application of this technology must also be considered for instance for the building of roads and airports whereas for small- scale projects like irrigation works, we should apply a cheaper technology," he said.

Referring to the construction of the Suramadu bridge in East Java, he said although it was financed with Chinese loans, the equipment and raw materials used were locally supplied and of good quality.

Meanwhile, Gapensi chairman Soeharsojo expressed his support to the government's policy to use local products, especially
in labor-intensive projects.

Using local products would automatically create employment opportunities, especially in the building materials industry so that it would also stimulate the real sector, he said, adding that Indonesian construction products were of better quality and cheaper. ***
