"JAPAN WEEK" TO MARK 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF RI-JAPAN TIES

Jakarta, June 2 (ANTARA) - A cultural exchange program called "Japan Week" will be held here this year to mark the 50th anniversary of Japan-Indonesia diplomatic ties.

The Japan Week was expected to strengthen friendship between the two nations, Kainchi Kuroda of the Japanese embassy said here on Tuesday.

The theme of the Japan Week, which will be organized on October 3-11, 2009, will be "The Year of Japanese-Indonesian Friendship".

Last year, the Japanese embassy also organized a cultural exchange program which was quite successful.

Last November, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono officially opened an Indonesia-Japan Expo (IJE) 2008 in Jakarta. The expo was one of a series of events to mark the 50th anniversary of Indonesia-Japan relations.

Around 100 entities from Japan and Indonesia took part in the expo. Former Japanese prime minister Yasuo Fukuda, who is also the Indonesia-Japan Friendship Association chairman, attended the ceremony.

In his address on the occasion, the President said ever since Indonesia and Japan established diplomatic relations, cooperation between the two countries had grown rapidly.

"During 50 years of diplomatic relations, both countries' prosperity and development have become increasingly inter-related," he said.

Many Indonesian people studied in Japan and after returning home made significant contributions to the Indonesian people's life.

"Indonesia and Japan have been cooperating well. I am very proud of the improvements in our bilateral relations in the past years," he said.

Since 2005, the two countries had signed three documents to enhance their bilateral cooperation, the president said.

They were a declaration for a peaceful and prosperous future, a declaration to overcome challenges in the future and an Indonesia-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement.

"The three documents each marked a new phase in two countries' cooperation which has become more comprehensive, strategic and marked by more positive dynamics," Yudhoyono said.
