GARUDA REOPENS JAKARTA-RIYADH-DAMMAM FLIGHT ROUTE

Jakarta, June 2 (ANTARA) - Indonesia's state-owned airline Garuda Indonesia on Tuesday reopened its Jakarta-Riyadh-Dammam flight route which had been closed since the end of 1990 to meet increased demand for the air link.

"We are optimistic our load-factor target of an average of 80 percent on the route will be met," PT Garuda Indonesia's EVP Sales and Market Agus Priyanto told newsmen after officially declaring the reopening of the route in the company of Saudi ambassador to Indonesia A.M. Amen Al-Khayyat and parties concerned at Terminal 2 of Soekarno-Hatta airport here on Tuesday.

He said the route would be served three times a week, namely every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday, using Boeing 747-499 aircraft with 41 seats in business class and 384 seats in economy class. The plane with flight number GA-984 will depart from Jakarta at 4pm and arrive in Riyadh at 8.40pm local time and leave Riyadh at 9.55pm and arrive at Dammam at 10.55pm.

The plane will return to Jakarta again from Dammam with flight number GA-985 at 11.55 local time and arrive in Jakarta at 12.50 hours.

Agus said the route was part of the 18 new networks the company planned to open this year. The Jakarta-Riyahd-Dammam route was reopened because demand rose in the past few years, proven by the high rate of occupancy in several airlines of the Middle East serving the route.

"Another evidence is an airline has also just opened its service on the route," he said.

Agus admitted that the main segment for the route was Indonesian migrant workers, followed by tourists.

"Tourism access for Saudi Arabia is open wider. With a population of around five millions in Riyadh and two millions in Dammam the cities are a big potential for development of Indonesian tourism," he said.

To support its expansion Garuda Indonesia has ordered 50 Boeing 737-800NG and four Airbus A330-200 which will be delivered in stages as of in the middle of 2009, as well as 10 Boeing 777-300ER which will arrive in 2011.

Garuda now flies to more than 49 domestic, regional and international destinations operating 61 wide-and medium wide-bodied.
