RI TO SUPPORT UN STEPS ON PYONGYANG'S NUCLEAR PROBLEM

Jeju, S Korea, June 2 (ANTARA) - Indonesia will support whatever steps the United Nations is to take with regard to the recent nuclear tests by North Korea, President Yudhoyono said here on Tuesday.

"I trust the UN which will take correct steps or issue a new resolution so long as it will be good and ensure security stability in East Asia," he said at a press conference before leaving Jeju for home.

President Yudhoyono was in Jeju to attend an Asean-South Korea summit to mark the 20th anniversary of the two sides' relations.

In connection with the North Korean nuclear problem he said that strong pressures were needed in order to change the situation. "What kind of a resolution it will be the UN Security Council must certainly know. What is important is all must see it as a serious problem," he said.

He said he hoped China as one of the UN Security Council members and also a member in the six-party talks could play a bigger role in overcoming the problem in view of its close relationship with North Korea.

"Everyone knows that China is able to communicate better with North Korea to convey the global concern to that country," he said.

Regarding the Association of Southeast Asian Nations' (Asean) stance on the issue, Yudhoyono said the grouping was ready to contribute to the settlement of the case although the more authoritative body for it was the six-party talks forum.

"Asean did not offer a new format because there is already a six-party talks forum which is a more effective forum for settling the problem although Asean as an organization and its members including Indonesia are always ready to contribute to the effort," he said.

The Indonesian government, he said, through its special envoy, Nana Sutresna, would keep monitoring the developments and seeking possible ways to help.

"We will see how things develop. We must be realistic because with regard to North Korea it will be China that North Korea will be willing to listen to more than other countries. If there is an opportunity, Indonesia will always be ready to play an important role in interanational relations," he said.***1***
