FLOOD HITS BALEENDAH, BANDUNG
Bandung, West Java, June 3 (ANTARA) - Flood inundated hundreds of houses at Baleendah, Bandung District, as Citarum river overflew, here on Wednesday.
Some local residents were surprised that rains still fell until early June.
"There is usually no more flood in May, and it was hardly flood in transitional season. But surprisingly it happens until June," Wahlan, a resident of Cieunteung Baleendah.
Local people had actually felt relief that there had been no rains in southern Bandung in the last two weeks.
Flood did not only bring water but also mud, he said.
The inundation forced local resident to evacuate their vehicles to higher ground.
"I don't know how many times we have been inundated, it is more than ten times. In that case, we are forced to move our vehicles to a higher location," he said.
The flood also submerged Merkasari elementary school at Cieunteung kampong, forcing the students to stay at home.
The floodwaters reached a height of between 50 centimeters and one meter, he said.
The flood cut off a one-kilometer long at Cieunteung, he said.
"Hopefully this is the last flood this season. we have been frustrated and bored with with the floods," Susi, another inhabitant, said.
Heavy rains have fallen in Bandung over the past three days and downpours on Tuesday triggered the flood.
In Addition to Baleendah, floods also affected Panyileukan and Cibiru areas in Bandung.
Last March, a flood again hit the Baleendah area, Bandung District. In March, Baleendah had been flooded at lest seven times since the start of the rainy season.
Cieunteung was flooded reaching a height of 50 cm to one meter. the Citarum river had been following incessant heavy rains in the Kertasari, Pacet and Majalaya areas.
Last November 2008, hundreds of houses in the Baleendah and Dayeuhkolot areas, Bandung District, were inundated as the Citarum river had overflowed. ***3***
