VP : NO NEW GAS EXPORT CONTRACTS UNTIL DOMESTIC NEED SATISFIED
Jakarta, June 3 (ANTARA) - The government has decided not to sign any new gas export contract until domestic need for gas supplies are adequately met, Vice President Jusuf Kalla said.
"So long as domestic need for gas supplies have not been met,, the government will not make any new gas export contract," Kalla said here Wednesday after chairing a meeting at his office to discuss gas-related matters and the construction of a new refinery.
The meeting was attended by Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro, Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) chairman Muhammad Lutfi, Gas Director General Evita Legwo, and state oil company PT Pertamina President Director Karen Agustin.
According to the vice president, the government's decision to make no new gas export contract had been agreed on by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono because it was made in an effort to meet domestic demand for gas.
"Domestic demand for gas has remained unmet. Therefore, we should make every possible effort to have it met before signing any new gas export contract," the vice president said.
He said the government at the meeting also decided to prioritize domestic gas supply, to improve domestic energy supply by constructing new refineries, and to set efficient prices for gas and energy.
Asked about the continuation of the Donggi Senoro gas bloc contract, the vice president said the old contract would continue to go on but for the purpose of meeting domestic demand.
"Thus for the Donggi Senoro contract, the price will remain the same but the gas will be used to meet domestic demand," the vice president said.
Meanwhile, Gas Director General Evita Legowo said according to analysis of Indonesia's gas trade balance, the country may experience a gas supply deficit by 2011.
The gas supply deficit could last until 2015, she said.
Under such a condition, the vice president said, so long as there was a domestic gas deficit, the government would not make any new gas export contract.***
