JAKARTA TO RAISE TAP WATER TARIFF
Jakarta, June 3 (ANTARA) - The Jakarta administration will discuss a plan to raise the monthly fee of tap water services with operators of PDAM (clean water supply companies) in line with the existing contract agreement.
"It seems that a hike of water supply tariff is unavoidable, and it should be first discussed before it is decided," Sarwo Handayani, the Jakarta administration's development assistant, said here on Tuesday.
He said the Jakarta authorities wanted to discuss the matter thoroughly with the Regulatory Body (BR) of PAM so that the proposed hike would be within a reasonable calculation.
However, the tariff hike should also be supported by technical target achievements by the two existing water supply utilities, namely Palyja and Aetra, both are subcontractors by PAM Jaya to provide water to city residents.
"So, the plan to increase the tariff must also consider the technical target and services, I agree on this," he said.
He could not mention the detail of the planned tariff hike because it should be calculated based on technical details and the amount of the operation costs.
Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo said the tap water tariff hike must be based on the water supply companies' achievements.
According to data of mid 2000, over 75 per cent of Jakartans, mostly the poorer segment of the population, were still without improved access to clean water, relying instead on multiple sources, including rivers, lakes and private vendors.
The government of Jakarta and the private operators had agreed on an automatic tariff adjustment. This agreement compelled the Jakarta government to increase the water tariff every six months so as to cover its mounting debt to private operators.
According to the Indonesian Consumer Foundation (YLKI), problems with tap water rank third on the YLKI's list of complaints, behind bank services, which topped the list and housing, which came in second.***
