SEVENTEEN HOTSPOTS DETECTED IN RIAU
Pekanbaru, Riau, June 4 (ANTARA) - Seven hotspots were detected in several regions in Riau Province, according to the meteorological, climatology, and geophysics station (BMKG) of Sultan Syarif Kasim airport II, here on Thursday.
Based on the data of the US NOAA 18 satellite, of 35 hotspots detected on Sumatra Island, 17 were in Riau, Ardhitama, a analysis staff of the local BMKG, said.
The number of the hotspots in Riau decreased from 40, which had earlier detected as indicators of plantation and forest fires, he said.
The 17 hotspots were located at the districts of Bengkalus (five hotspots), Rokan Hilir (five), Pelalawan (two), Siak (two), Rokan Hulu (one), Kampar (one), and Dumai city (one), he said.
The temperature in Riau on Thursday was between 32 and 33 degrees Celsius, he said.
According to the BMKG forecast, there was a slim chance for raining in Riau and the drought level was quite extreme.
Therefore, BMKG urged local farmers not to set fire in forest or plantation areas in order to prevent haze.
Last late May, dry air triggered at least 350 hot spots which were detected on Sumatra Island, including in West Sumatra.
On May 26, some 159 hotspots of forest and plantation fires were detected in Riau.
Based on the monitoring of NOAA 18 Satellite, the hotspots were detected in 11 out of the existing 12 districts in the province.
The hotspots spread in Rokan Hilir district (55 hot spots), Pelelawan district (24), Rokan Hulu (17), Kuantan Singingi and Indragiri Hulu districts (respectively 13), Bengkalis district (11), Kampar (10), Siak (seven), Indragiri Hilir district (six), Pekanbaru (one), and Dumai City (two).
The hotspots have produced haze covering the province. A number of elementary schools were closed due to haze covering Rokan Hilir, Riau Province, because the haze could affect the health of school children.***3***
