PRESIDENT HOPES HOUSE STILL ABLE TO PASS CORRUPTION COURT BILL
Jakarta, June 4 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said he hoped the House of Representatives (DPR) would be able to pass the bill on formation of a corruption court before the term of its present members expired in September.
If the bill was finalized in time , the government would not need to issue a government regulation in lieu of law (Perppu) to form the court, he said.
"The government very much hopes the DPR can finish deliberating the bill before its members' terms of office end," the President said during a talk-show hosted by privately-run Anteve television station here on Thursday.
The talk-show was held in the runup to the upcoming presidential elections on July 8, 2009.
The Constitutional Court had asked the government and the House of Representatives (DPR) to enact a law on formation of a corruption criminal court on December 19, 2009 at the latest.
The House of Representatives and the government now only have no more than three months to finalize the legislation on a corruption court.
"I have to admit that I have not issued a perppu on that matter. But it should be remembered that a perppu can only be issued by under extraordinary circumstances," said Yudhoyono who during the talk-show was accompanied by his wife, Ani Yudhoyono, and vice presidential candidate Boediono.
Yudhoyono, chief patron of the Democratic Party, is seeking reelection in the July 8 presidential election with economist Boediono as his running mate.
He said he did not want the government to be too easy in issuing a perppu because each time it had to issue a perppu the prevailing circumstances should be considered extraordinary.
Yudhoyono said t when he had a consultative meeting with the DPR leadership, House factions leaders and a number of members of the House Special Committee recently, the government expressed its desire that the bill on corruption court be finalized soon before the current members of the House ended their terms at the end of September 2009.***1***
