AGRICULTURE MINISTRY ALLOWS RICE EXPORTS UP TO DECEMBER
Jakarta, June 4 (ANTARA) - Agriculture Minister Anton Apriantono said the end of the period in which traders could export aromatic rice would be moved back from June to December 2009.
"The period for exporting rice should not be limited unlike the quantity of the exports. We have submitted a proposal for the extension of the rice exporting period until December," the minister said here on Thursday.
He said there was no problem in extending the period for rice exports to the end of this year as long as the volume of the exports remained limited and periodic evaluations were carried out.
"So, the opportunity to export rice still exists. Please go ahead if you want to export rice," the minister said.
The government has set aside 100,000 tons of aromatic rice for export this year. But the recommendations the agriculture ministry had issued to exporters so far had covered only 60,000 tons.
Director general for processing and marketing of agricultural products Zainal Bachrudin said up to the end of May 2009, his side had sent 10 export recommendations to the trade ministry with a total volume of 60,000 tons.
"Requests for export recommendations have come from 16 companies but the number of recommendations we have issued to the trade ministry is only 10 companies with a total volume of 60,000 tons," the director general said.
In the meantime, director general for external trade Diah Maulida said her side had extended export realization licenses to four companies with total volume of 2,000 tons.
"The volumes of exports for each company vary from 60 to 1,000 tons for each shipment," she said.
The export destinations also varied which among other included Japan, Singapore and the United States, she said.
Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu has said she would be very cautious in responding to the request of state logistics agency Bulog for extension of rice exports from June to the end of the year.
"I am afraid that there would be rice scarcities at the end of the year so that I think we have to issue a regulation that would be effective until the end of the harvest season," the minister said last month.***2***
