PRESIDENT ASKS PEOPLE TO KEEP PLANTING TREES AMID ELECTION CAMPAIGNS
Jakarta, June 5 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhohono called on all sides not to forget the tree planting program amid the political campaigns for the upcoming presidential elections on July 8, 2009.
"Campaigns for the upcoming presidential race as well as for the legislative elections last April only take about three weeks but the tree planting campaign must last forever," the president said during the observance of Environment Day at the State Palace here on Friday.
The head of state jokingly said that the election campaigns were supervised by the General Elections Commission (KPU) and the Election Supervisory Board (Panwaslu).
"But there is no body which supervises tree planting campaigns. So, please do not hesitate to continue campaigning for the planting of trees," Yudhoyono said to an outburst of the audience's laughter.
He said that the one-million-tree planting program had been carried out over the past three years under the slogan 'one man, one tree.'
"We hope we will become better in the coming ten to twenty years through this program. This is a form of our love for the next generation," he said.
Present at the function to observe Environment Day at the State Palace were also a number of United Cabinet ministers, Mrs Ani Yudhoyono, House Speaker Agung Laksono and People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Chairman Hidyat Nurwahid.
On the occasion, the Kalpataru and Adipura awards, tokens of appreciation for achievements in the environmental field, were presented to this year's winners.
Indonesia, which is believed to be the world's third largest producer of carbon emissions, launched a nation-wide drive to plant 79 million trees across the country in 2007.
The reforestation drive was initiated in the runup to the Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) which took place in Indonesia's resort island of Bali for two weeks in December, 2007. ***3***
