TWO BOATS CARRYING RI WORKERS CAPSIZE IN MALAYSIAN WATERS

Batam, June 5 (ANTARA) - Two boats carrying 32 Indonesian migrant workers capsized, killing one person, causing 9 others to go missing in Tanjung Piai waters, near Pontian District, Johor, Malaysia, on Thursday.

Twenty-two Indonesians survived the accident, according to Bernama.

Southern Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) operations director Captain Mohd Zubil Mat Som said MMEA were informed by the Tanjung Pelepas port control room at 7.45am that a ship, MV Sanne St John, had found a body floating about two nautical miles off Tanjung Piai.

He added that the search and rescue operation to find the nine missing Indonesians would carry on while those rescued had been sent to the Kukup government clinic for a medical checkup.

Last May, a boat carrying 30 Indonesian workers from Malaysia sank in Pengerang waters, while another boat with nine Pakistani on board also capsized in Ramunia Gulf.

Last Sunday (May 31), 25 Indonesian workers intending to process their working documents in Malaysia sank in Karimun Besar waters, Riau Islands Province, Sumatra. They left Pontian for Karimun by a speedboat. Ten people were missing, four were killed, and 12 others, including the captain, survived.

Meanwhile, the death toll in the recent Afghan immigrant boat accident in Halang Island waters, Kubu sub district, Rokan Hilir (Rohil) district, Riau Province, has risen to 19.

The boat carrying 36 illegal Afghan immigrants from Malaysia capsized in the waters in Riau, Sumatra, on Thursday (May 28), leaving 19 dead, 16 survivors, and 1 still missing, Ashari, head of the Bagan Bapiapi immigration office, said recently.

"It is believed one immigrant is still missing," he said.

The boat capsized after hitting one of the poles of a fish trap in Kubu Island waters when it was dark and the air was filled by haze making the boat skipper unable to see the pole.
