TRY SUTRISNO: INDONESIA MUST BE FIRM OVER AMBALAT

Jakarta, June 4 (ANTARA) - Former vice president Try Sutrisno said here on Thursday Indonesia had to be firm and straightforward towards Malaysia with regard to the Ambalat case.

"However do not immediately think of war. That is the last resort," he said after attending the launching of a book written by religious figure Ahmad Syafii Maarif.

The former army general said intrusion by Malaysian warships into Indonesian territory particularly in the Ambalat waters had been committed many times.

Indonesia must settle the problem to avoid provocations from various quarters which were feared to cause problems.

He said Indonesia and Malaysia were expected to have a will to settle the border problem peacefully.

He also hoped that the Malaysian government would give a positive response as proof of its goodwill and good neighborliness.

Although no encouraging hope had been seen Try Sutrisno said he did not agree if the diplomacy that had been done by Indonesia and Malaysia would fail.

He hoped the government could implement an active and independent concept of the country's diplomacy. "In practice Indonesia must be firm," he said.

Try however said he did not agree with perceiving the word as war. "What must be remembered is that Indonesia loves peace but also loves independence more," he said.
