MEGA-PRO TEAM STUDYING POLLING STATION REDUCTION PLAN

Jakarta, June 6 (ANTARA) - The campaign team of presidential candidate Megawati Soekarnoputri and her running mate Prabowo Subianto (Mega-Pro pair) is studying the planned reduction in the number of polling stations for the July election.

Indonesian Democratic Party-Struggle (PDIP) secretary general Pramono Anung said here on Saturday the Mega-Pro campaign team was currently studying the General Election Commission (KPU)'s plan to slash the number of polling stations for the July election.

"We are studying the areas where the number of polling stations will be reduced by the KPU, because we are afraid the cuts will be made in areas where the PDIP and Gerindra have wide mass support," Pramono Anung said.

But Anung did not say in which parts of the country the two parties had wide mass support.

He said the Mega-Pro campaign team was currently observing the locations of polling stations that would be retained and those of polling stations that would be shut down for the July presidential election.

"After the team has completed its study, we will give our response," Anung said.

Meanwhile, Megawati's running mate Prabowo Subianto said the KPU's plan to reduce the number of polling stations was also being studied by the the parties' team of lawyers.

The KPU plans to reduce the number of polling stations for the July election on the ground of financial efficiency as called for in in KPU Decree No 42/2009.

The decree said each polling station could accommodate 800 voters while, in fact, in last April's legislative election each polling station only accommodated 500 voters. Therefore the number of polling stations would be cut by 35 percent.

Based on KPU data in the legislative election, there were 528,217 polling stations and 171 million people were registered in the permanent voters' list (DPT).

While in the upcoming presidential election, the number of permanent voters in the list had risen to 176 million.
