MEGAWATI-PRABOWO DUO TO ABOLISH `OUTSOURCING` SYSTEM

Karawang, Indonesia, June 6 (ANTARA) - Presidential candidate Megawati Soekarnoputri and her running mate Prabowo Subianto have signed a political contract with workers organizations to abolish the "out-sourcing" system in manpower recruitment in the country.

The two figures signed the conract with labor representatives attending a mass gathering to observe the 108th birthday of Indonesia's first president, Soekarno, at Rengasdengklok on Saturday.

Before the contract's signing, a labor representative reported that a number of workers organizations had at a recent meeting decided to ask the Megawati-Probowo presidential and vice presidential candidate pair to scrap the outsourcing system if they were elected.

The workers also asked the duo to make May 1 or Labor Day a national holiday if they win the July 8 race.

After signing the contract along with Megawati, Prabowo said they had made the commitment for all Indonesian workers. "We, on the occasion of Soekarno's birthday, declare our resolve to do our utmost to do away with the outsourcing system," he said.

He said he and Megawati would also sign political contracts with people in other professions, namely farmers, fishermen, students and traditional market traders.

An Indonesian Democratic Party-Strugle (PDIP) executive, Maruarar Sirait, meanwhile, said the Megawati-Prabowo duo's political contrats with workers was concrete proof of their empathy for workers.

If the outsourcing system was scrapped, workers could work with a greater sense of security and thus perform better in their jobs, he said.
