21 FARM PRODUCE EXPORTING COUNTRIES TO MEET IN BALI
Brisbane, June 5 (ANTARA) - Australian Trade Minister Simon Crean will leave for Bali on Saturday to preside over the 33rd ministerial conference of the Cairns Group (CG) to discuss world trade and ways to combat protectionism.
The meeting to be attended by ministers of 19 farm produce exporting countries including Indonesia's Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu, will be held from June 7 through 9.
Simon Crean said Friday it would be very timely to hold the Bali meeting in view of the declining world trade as the result of the global economic crisis.
"The Bali meeting is expected to send a strong political message on the importance of combating protectionism and finalizing the World Trade Oganization (WTO) negotiations," he said.
As far as Australia was concerned, the CG ministerial meeting is very important and will revive the momentum to complete the Doha Round.
"Only by completing the Doha round would the many market disrupting subsidies, like those for milk exports, be able to be abolished," he said.
Simon Crean said the Bali meeting would also be attended by US Trade Minister Ron Kirk, Indian Trade and Industry Minister Anand Sharma, and WTO Director General Pascal Lamy.
Besides Australia and Indonesia, the other Cairns Group members are Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Malaysia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, South Africa, Thailand, and Uruguay. ***5***
