EMBASSY PROVIDES IMMIGRATION SERVICES IN SHANGHAI

Beijing, June 7 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Embassy in Beijing is opening an immigration service once in three months in Shanghai for Indonesians who need services such as passport renewals, and reports on arrivals and departures, a diplomat said here over the weekend.

"We come to Shanghai to provide immigration services for Indonesians who need document arrangements today and tomorrow," Immigration Attache of the Indonesian Embassy here Firdaus Amir said.

He said that as a proactive effort, the officials of the Immigration Office in Beijing went to Shanghai to provide services for Indonesians for Indonesians staying in Shanghai.

The Indonesian immigration attache said that the immigration services were open periodically in Shanghai because Indonesia had not yet opened a representative office in the Chinese western coastal city.

So far, Indonesians staying in Shanghai have to come to Beijing to arrange their immigration documents. Many raised complaints because they needed a lot of money for their travel to Beijing, he said.

"In order to overcome the problem we are proactive to come to Shanghai to provide service for them. We do this once in three months," Firdaus said.

He said that the presence of the immigration services in Shanghai was highly welcome by Indonesians staying in the city as it make easier for them to arrange various immigration documents.

"They take advantage of the services. Instead of coming to Beijing where they have to spent a lot of money for their trips, they take the opportunity to arrange their documents with us in Shanghai," he said.

He said that during the two-day services, his side would also make use of the opportunity to have a meeting with Indonesians there for a briefing on the upcoming presidential and vice presidential elections on July 8, 2009.

For those who stayed in Shanghai and had been included in the fixed voters' list, the overseas election committee would send them ballot papers through the postal services from Beijing.***5***
