PRESIDENT RIDES BICYCLE IN OBSERVANCE OF ENVIRONMENT DAY
Jakarta, June 7 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, along with about 5,000 Jakarta residents, rode a bicycle from the Senayan sports complex to the National Monument Squre (Monas) in observance of the International Environment Day here on Sunday.
Wearing a T-shirt and a white training trousers, the president was accompanied by his wife Mrs Ani Yudhyono and Environment Minister Rachmat Witoelar, Tourism and Culture Minister Jero Wacik, and Research and Technology Minister Kusmayanto Kadiman.
They started from the East Parking Lot of Senayan at 7 am and arrived at the Monas square at 8 am.
The president thanks the people who took part in the activities held to observe the international environment day. He also called on the people to help preserve the environment and reduce the use of fossil fuel oils.
"Those who want to go to a place which is not too far are advised to use bicycles or go on foot," Yudhoyono said.
In his address to observe Environment Day at the State Palace on Friday, the president asked all sides to reduce carbon dioxide emission.
"The carbon dioxide emission creates global warming, climate change and wide spread natural disasters due to fossil fuels' burning. Let's solve the problem with the right policy and efficient use of energy," he added.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono asked the Indonesia people to take serious steps to preserve the environment and save planet Earth.
He said the country's environment, forests, fields, mountains and seas should continue to be preserved so that damage to them would not occur.
Yudhoyono also called for increasing campaign on tree planting program. "We are determined to realize the slogan 'one man one tree'," the president added.
The Indonesia people should make joint efforts to repair the environment which had been damaged so far. "Let us repair it in the right way, by changing our lifestyle, providing a budget, entering into international cooperation and seeking technology to overcome all of the problems." he said.***3***
