SBY-BOEDIONO CAMPAIGN TEAM MEETS BAWASLU

Jakarta, June 8 (ANTARA) - The campaign team of the Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono-Boediono presidential/vice presidential ticket, met with the Election Supervisory Body (Bawaslu) here on Monday to clarify the allegation of campaigning earlier than the official schedule.

The closed-door meeting was attended among others by Hatta Radjasa, chairman of the SBY-Boediono campaign team, Marzuki Alie (member of team), Bawaslu Chairman Nur Hidayat Sardini, and Bambang Eka Cahya Widodo, Wahidah Suaib, and Wirdyaningsih, three of them are Bawaslu members.

Hatta Radjasa said the national gathering of the political party coalition supporting SBY-Boediono held on May 30, 2008, at the Jakarta Fair ground, Kemayoran, central Jakarta, was an internal and closed meeting.

"The May 30 event was pure a gathering to make internal preparations of the coalesced 24 political parties for the presidential election's campaign later. So, it was indeed an internal and closed-door meeting," he told the press after the one-hour closed door meeting with Bawaslu.

He said the meeting had gotten a permission from the Central Jakarta Police office and a copy of the permission letter was sent to Jakarta's General Election Supervisory Committee (Panwaslu).

"The reconfirmation said it could be implemented as long as it was an internal meeting and did not use any political party's attributes. and we obeyed," Radjasa, concurrently the minister/state secretary, said.

Concerning the live broadcast by television stations, he said it was not planned by his team but he could not forbid the pressmen from covering the event. "We of course could not restrict the freedom of the press," he said.

Bawaslu has reported the SBY-Boediono campaign team to the National Police's Criminal Investigation Unit (Bareskrim Polri) for allegedly starting its campaign activity earlier than the officially-set date.

"The body considers the broadcasting of the gathering on local TV stations as a form of early campaigning, violating Article 213 of the Law No. 42/2008 on the Presidential Election," Bawaslu Chairman Nur Hidayat Sardini said earlier.

The General Elections Commission (KPU) has set schedules for closed door campaigning from June 2 to 10, and mass rallies from June 11 to July 4, 2009. The presidential elections will be held on July 8, 2009.***
