PRESIDENT ASKS NATION TO BECOME SELF-RELIANT
Boyolali, Indonesia, June 8 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has asked the nation, including farmers, to become self-reliant.
"I ask all to be more than just self reliant, ... what we strive for as a great nation is to achieve food self-reliance," the president said when officially opening a national jamboree of integrated crop management field schools (SL-PTTs) here on Monday.
According to the head of state, the world's increasing population, extreme climate change, and improving income would steadily drive up world demand for food.
"For the sake of our grand children, we want to develop food self-reliance in line with the needs of the era," he said.
Indonesia managed to become self-reliant in the productions of rice, corn, and consumer sugar in 2008, he said.
The head of state said the government was focusing on food self reliance and the improvement of farmers' welfare.
"All programs have been carried out to achieving both goals," he said.
Commodity prices should be affordable and farmers' incomes should be adequate, he said.
He said the government has increased the state budget for agriculture from Rp14.3 trillion in 2005, to Rp41.3 trillion in 2008, and Rp45.8 trillion in 2009.
Yudhoyono asked all components of the nation to help achieve self-reliance in all sectors.
He said Indonesia's success in settling its debts with IMF, has made Indonesia more independent economically.
In the political field, Indonesia was now free to make friends with many countries in the world. Indonesia was no longer facing a military embargo and had managed to solve the East Timor issue peacefully.
Indonesia would boost its national defense industry in order to be independent in the defense field, he said.
"Our nation does not only belong to us, but also to our grand children," he said before around 5,000 participants, including farmers. The jamboree is being held from June 7 to 10, 2009. ***
