PRESIDENT WARNS VILLAGE HEADS NOT TO INFLUENCE VILLAGERS
Solo, Indonesia, June 7 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has warned village heads not to influence villagers in the upcoming July 8 presidential election.
"Your task is not to influence people in the July election. You should not do that," the president said in his address to open a Village Heads Union Congress (Parade) at Surakarta Kasunanan Palace here on Monday.
Speaking before thousands of village chiefs from across the country, the president called on them to help make sure that the presidential election would run orderly, safely, and smoothly.
"Please check the permanent voters list (DPT) and encourage all villagers to exercise their right to vote," the president said.
He added that if all people did so, the presidential election would run smoothly and successfully.
"Who will be elected president, let God answer this question. Therefore your task is to carry out the people's mandate in the best way possible," the president said.
The president who is hoping to be elected for a second term in office also asked the village heads not to stage a protest rally in Jakarta every time they had a complaint or were facing a problem. .
"It is no use to travel to Jakarta just to stage a protest rally. It is better for you to remain at your respective villages and find the best possible solution to the problem you face," the president said in the company of Home Affairs Minister Mardiyanto and Central Java Governor Bibit Waluyo.
After opening the congress, the head of state was scheduled to make an overland trip to Semarang to spend the night there and dedicate the campus of the Teachers Training Institute (IKIP PGRI) on Tuesday morning.
On Tuesday afternoon the president would pay a visit to senior Moslem cleric Sahal in Pati.
From Pati, President Yudhyoyono would continue his overland trip to Surabya, East Java, where on Wednesday morning he would officiate at the opening of the landmark Surabaya-Madura (Suramadu) bridge.***
