PRESIDENT DEDICATES IKIP PGRI CAMPUS BUILDING

Semarang, Central Java, June 9 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhyono dedicated the main building on the campus of the Teachers' Training and Pedagogy Institute (IKIP) of the Indonesian Teachers' Association (PGRI) here Tuesday.

The head of state, accompanied by Education Minister Bambang Sudibyo and IKIP PGRI Rector Dr Sulistyo, signed a plague marking the building's inauguration.

The seven-story building on a plot of land measuring 2,170 m2 started to be constructed in 2008 and had cost Rp44,250,951,460.

On the occasion, the president took a close look at the institute's English and Indonesian language laboratories as well as the Pancasila (state ideology) and Citizenship education class located on the fourth floor.

IKIP PGRI was established on July 23, 1981, and now has 10,700 students. The institute has so far produced more than 18,000 graduates.

After dedicating the IKIP-PGRI campus building, the President left for the next destinations on his itinerary : Pati, Rembang and Surabaya (East Java). Traveling by car, the head of state and his entourage would cover a total distance of e 300 km.

In Pati and Rembang, Yudhoyono was scheduled to meet local ulemas (Islamic scholars), and in Surabaya he would inaugurate the Surabaya-Madura or Suramadu bridge.

The President began his three-day working visit in Central Java and East Java on Monday.

On the same day in Boyolali, Central Java, he officially opened a jamboree organized by the Field School for Integrated Crop Management (SLPPT) at the Boyolali Donohudan Haj Dormitory, and in Solo he opened a village head congress at the Solo Palace.

Last May 22, the president inspected the site of the Suramadu bridge project and said the 5,348-meter bridge was the longest sea-crossing structure in Indonesia and a symbol of national awakening and development.

"Do not see the bridge as a mere link between Surabaya and Madura but try to understand that it is a symbol of our civilization and national development," the president said then.

According to the head of state, the Suramadu bridge was also o monumental structure because of its huge financial cost and complicated technology.

Built at a total cost of about Rp4.5 trillion, the Suramadi bridge is also the longest structure of its kind in Indonesia.
