LAKSONO: DIFFICULT TO IMPLEMENT EFA WITHOUT SPECIAL STRATEGY

Jakarta, June 9 (ANTARA) - The Education for All (EF) program in Asia and the Pacific will be difficult to implement without a special strategy for the region which is marked by very diverse conditions.

"I would like to emphasize the importance of the parliaments' support for this program, namely by implementing the EFA Global Action Plan which I believe is a comprehensive strategy development to intensify coordination at the national and international levels," Agung Laksono, chairman of the Asia Pacific Parliamentarians for Education (FASPPED) said when opening the FASPPED's Executive Bureau meeting at Parliament building here on Tuesday.

The meeting was attended by among others Vladimir Kouchnirenko of UNESCO, Legislative Assembly Chairman of Samoa Falemoe Tolofuaivelelei and Kim Young-Jin, a member of the Korean National Assembly.

FASPPED was expected to adopt the Oslo Declaration which was launched last December, according to Agung Laksono, concurrently the Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR).

"As president of FASPPED and representative of the DPR, I hereby announce that we are ready to host the FASPPED Executive Bureau Meeting and General Assembly in 2010," he said.

The first meeting of the FASPPED Executive Bureau in Jakarta on June 8-9, 2009, was expected to produce guidance for parliaments in Asia and The Pacific in ensuring children, youths and women in the region to get better chances in pursuing education.

On the current global financial crisis, Laksono said, no country was free from the impact of the global crisis. Therefore, it was crucial for the international community to immediately take action by strengthening cooperation in addressing the crisis, he said.

The results of the FASPPED meeting in Jakarta would be submitted to the Meeting of the Parliamentarians Focal Point to be held in UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, October 3, 2009.

The meeting would also discuss the organization's position regarding topics of the 35th Session of UNESCO General Conference.
