JAPAN TO FUND BUILDING OF FLOOD CONTROL SYSTEM

Jakarta, June 9 (ANTARA) - Japan will be funding the construction of flood control infrastructure under a Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) scheme worth 7.94 billion yen, the equivalent of Rp 825 billion.

"Flood control infrastructure will be built in West Java, East Java, South Sumatra and Sulawesi," Program Development Director of the Directorate General of Water Resources Hartoyo Supriyanto said in Jakarta Tuesday.

He said flood problems have a wide impact on various aspect of the life of the people. The JICA loan package for the building of flood control infrastructure was already signed in Tokyo on March 31, 2009, under the Urban Flood Control System Improvement in Selected Cities (IP-551) package.

On the same occasion, a Countermeasure For Sediment in Wonogiri Multipurpose Dam Reservoir (IP-552) package worth 6.06 billion yen, the equivalent of Rp 630 billion, was also signed. Hartoyo said the comprehensive flood control system obviously cost a great deal of money.

The inadequate government budget prompted the use of foreign sources of funding such as a loan from the Japanese government or JICA, Hartoyo said. ***2***
