BOEDIONO: GOVT NEEDS TO STRENGTHEN SOCIAL SAFETY NET

Medan, N Sumatra, June 9 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government needs to continue to strengthen its social safety net (JPS) program to maintain the domestic economy and security, especially during current global crisis, Prof. Dr. Boediono said here on Tuesday.

"The JPS is an important program for developing the country's economy besides infrastructure development projects and various deregulatory measures. The JPS is also important for state security and other countries have also used it," the economist said.

Boediono said JPS was done because an economic crisis could quickly turn into a security crisis and later a socio-political and moral crisis that could endanger the country.

He said JPS brought a lot of advantages such as increasing public income and purchasing power to promote the real sector.

"The central and local governments indeed have to intervene and increase their intervention, particularly on behalf of low-income families and micro, small and medium businesses to boost the economy," he said at a seminar on "Indonesia in the Middle of Global Crisis."
In a dialogue with fishermen and villagers of Kurnia, Belawan, Boediono also emphasized the importance of aid for fishermen.

To smooth distribution, Boediono who is also the running mate of incumbent President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in his bid for his reelection on July 8, fishermen or other business groups in the village to organize themselves.

"It is better if they join a cooperative so that distribution of aid can be done more easily," he said.

In a dialogue at the village inhabited mostly by ethnic Chinese fishermen Boediono also listened to their accounts on their problem of accessing funds to be used as a capital for fishing.

"We have no money to buy boats which costs about Rp30 million a unit at the lowest. So we are using small boats and therefore our catch is also small," a fisherman said.

"I want to shake hands with Pak Boediono. Who knows he will be vice president later. I saw him on TV last night. He looks like a Chinese," Alin, a mother, said after shaking hands with Boediono.
