PRESIDENT: RI RESOLVED TO DEVELOP MILITARY INDUSTRY

Semarang, C Java, June 9 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said here on Tuesday the government was resolved to develop military industry in stages.

"If all military equipment should come from abroad it certainly will not be good for the nation. Therefore, we need to develop our own military industry," he said at a meeting with Islamic clerics.

He said with the industry it was hoped Indonesia would be stronger because it could produce military hardware domestically. "At least we would not be like before, namely buying tanks and aircraft which later become useless because of a military embargo," he said.

He said the conditions showed that the nation was not yet self-reliant as a respected and happy nation.

"After the embargo was revoked the nation must no longer be live under the constant threat of such sanctions or embargoes so that it can be more independent," he said.

To boost its self-reliance the country must increase its competitiveness, particularly in the field of technology and others.

"Based on statistical data our competitiveness index has increased from year to year. This achievement however must not make us complacent but we must keep increasing it," he said.

On the occasion President Yudhoyono also reminded all parties that an uncivilized nation was a nation that did not have a good character and behavior.

"I hope clerics will teach people to have a good character as was shown by the Prophet. Although it is long to achieve with diligence change will certainly happen," he said.

He said other signs of a civilized nation were willingness to settle problems in a good way by avoiding violence, war or actions that could cause fear, worries and damage to others.

"Problems that arise must be settled peacefully, fairly and with tolerance. If we are able to realize this, they can be used as pillars for the country's civilization," he said.

President Yudhoyno said other countries could be invited to do similar things in settling problems peacefully without having to impose an embargo or sanctions.

"In UN meetings, I have always said that every problem can be settled without war. Let us introspect," he said.***3***
