Jakarta, June 10 (ANTARA) - Malaysian Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Abdul Aziz Jafar has offered an apology to Indonesia over the Ambalat issue, an Indonesian legislator reported from Kuala Lumpur.
"The Malaysian Navy chief of staff has offered an apology and promised to keep his soldiers away from Ambalat waters in an effort to avoid physical conflict with Indonesian soldiers," House of Representatives' Commission I deputy chairman Yusron Ihza Mahendra said by phone from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Wednesday.
Mahendra is currently leading a House Commission delegation for a marathon meeting with Malaysian government officials to discuss encroachments on Indonesian maritime territory in the Ambalat block by Malaysian Navy personnel.
"In our meeting earlier, we were received by Malaysian Foreign Affairs Ministry officials, and on the occasion we urged the country to speed up the solution to Ambalat issue. It was on the occasion that the Malaysian Navy chief of staff offered his apology," Mahendra said.
He added that the Malaysian Foreign Affairs Ministry side had promised to hasten the solution of the Ambalat issue through diplomatic channels.
"The promise was made by Malaysian Foreign Affairs Deputy Minister Philay after the delegation from the House of Representatives' Commission I urged him to do so," Mahendra said.
During his official visit to Malaysia, Mahendra was accompanied by Hepi Bone Zulkarnaen of Golkar Party faction, Andreas Pareira of Indonesian Democratic Party Struggle (PDI-P) faction, Shidqi Wahab of Democratic Party faction, and Joko Susilo of National Mandate Party faction.
To the House Commission delegation, Philay repeatedly said his side would speed up negotiations with his partner from Indonesia.
"We will speed up negotiation with our Indonesian partners to reach a positive result to the solution of Ambalat case," Mahendra quoted Philay as saying.
Meanwhile, the Malaysian Navy chief of staff also said he was serious to bring the Amblat conflict to an end.
He said he would keep Malaysian soldiers away from Ambalat waters in order to avoid a physical clash with Indonesian soldiers.
"We do not want to make war with Indonesia whatsoever," Admiral Abdul Aziz Jafar was quoted by Mahendra as saying.***
