INT`L SUPPORT NEEDED TO REALIZE PALESTINE`S INDEPENDENCE

Jakarta, June 10 (ANTARA) - International support is needed to realize an independent state of Palestine, Indonesian Permanent Representative to the United Nations Marty Natalegawa said here on Wednesday.

"If we talk about Palestine, the position of Indonesia is very clear and straightforward in supporting the struggle of the Palestinian people," Natalegawa said on the sidelines of the 'United Nations Public Forum in Support of the Palestinian People' being held here, June 8-10, 2009.

Indonesia's support had been demonstrated in various forums including through multilateral diplomacy in the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly, he said.

"As a manifestation of our support, we offered to host this event," he said.

Marty Natalegawa said the momentum of the meeting's implementation was very strategic.

It was strategic because there was an indication which could create a hope following a change in the US policy regarding the Middle East issue. It was reflected in US President Barack Hussein Obama's responses toward issues on ceasefire, climate change and the Middle East.

"Although it doesn't mean that automatically the situation in Palestine will be better but at least we acknowledge that there is a crucial point and we are building international support for Palestine and keep it solid," he said.

The Israeli government under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu now experiences a setback in the peace process with the Palestinian people.

The Israeli military aggression in December 2008-January 2009 killed around 1,400 Palestinian people, including women, children and other civilians, while only 13 Israeli, mostly military personnel, died.

The 22-day onslaught injured more than 5,000 Palestinians, mostly civilians, and cost the Palestinian economy at least $1.6 billion, destroyed some 4,000 residential buildings and damaged 16,000 other houses.

The Israeli use of controversial flesh-eating weapons against civilians and UN buildings has also prompted universal condemnation and calls for war crime charges to be brought against Tel Aviv.
