PRABOWO FULLY SUPPORTS PRESIDENT`S POLICY ON AMBALAT

Jakarta, June 10 (ANTARA) - Vice presidential aspirant Prabowo Subianto said he fully supported President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's policy on the Ambalat issue with Malaysia.

"In relation with our national sovereignty and the foreign threat to claim part of our territory, we have to be united in supporting our incumbent president to solve the problem, because it is the right thing for us to do," Prabowo said here on Monday.

The vice presidential hopeful from the Greater Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) said "we should not criticize the captain of our national ship (the president) when the vessel is in the middle of rough seas."
"That is my attitude, and we have to support our legitimate government without reserve," said Prabowo who is presidential candidate Megawati Soekarnoputri's running mate.

Prabowo said anybody at the helm of the Indonesian government would not be prepared to accept a compromise when national sovereignty was at stake.

"That is why, I say we have to strengthen our national economy and prevent our natural resources from being stolen by other countries," Prabowo said.

He said foreign parties' acts that disturbed national sovereignty had to be dealt with in the same way as acts to reduce national resources that had made the nation unable to buy warships and fighter planes.

"Because we don't have much money and only have a limited number of warships and fighter jets, other countries think we have little strength to defend our sovereignty," Prabowo said.

However, Prabowo added that he was thankful because the Malaysian government under Prime Minister Dato Sri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak said his country did not want to go to war with Indonesia.

"I read the Malaysian prime minister's statement that he wants to remain friends with us and therefore we have to be thankful for that," Prabowo said.

Meanwhile, Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono said earlier that Indonesia would not entertain Malaysia's claim to the Ambalat block.
