PRESIDENT PROMISES EARLY DETECTION SYSTEM FOR MIGRANT WORKERS ABUSE

Jakarta, June 11 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said the government would establish an early detection system for the protection of Indonesian migrant workers (TKI) abroad.

President Yudhoyono made the remark at his office on Thursday during a press conference on severe torture sustained by Siti Hajar, and Indonesian migrant worker in Malaysia.

The president said he had discussed the idea to establish an early detection system for the protection of TKI with Indonesian Ambassador to Malaysia Da'i Bachtiar and the National Agency for the Placement and Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (BNP2TKI) chief Jumhur Hidayat.

"I discussed the matter with the Indonesian envoy to Malaysia and the BNP2TKI chief a few moments ago about the way how to establish a new system or mechanism to detect maltreatment of our workers abroad," the president said.

According to the president, it was not good if the torture suffered by Indonesian migrant workers abroad was known several days or months later.

To establish the early detection system, the president said a good cooperation between Indonesia and the country where the migrant workers work was needed.

For Siti Hajar case, President Yudhoyono said the government would give its best possible assistance to her and her family in Garut district, West Java.

"I give my serious attention to what has been experienced by Siti Hajar because it is beyond human comprehension. I have a great concern for what has happened to Siti Hajar," President Yudhoyono said.

The head of state ensured that the government would follow up the case of torture suffered by Siti Hajar, and expressed hope that law and justice would be enforced by law enforcers in Malaysia.

"I have instructed our ambassador in Malaysia and BNP2TKI chief Jumhur Hidayat to take proper measures in dealing with the case," the president said.
