VP: INDONESIA ABLE TO GET AHEAD WITH SELF-RELIANCE
Yogyakarta, June 11 (ANTARA) - With self-reliance, Indonesia can become a big and developed nation, Vice President Jusuf Kalla said here on Thursday.
"Only a big nation can be self-reliant in meeting the needs of its people, and I am optimistic we can be one of those big nations with self-reliance," Kalla said.
The vice president made the statement when closing the 27th congress of the Islamic Students Association for Organization Safety Assembly (HMI MPO).
According to the vice president, self reliance could cover many things such as food self reliance, energy self reliance and others.
"The notion that a nation can only become big with foreign assistance is not my philosophy. No. To be a developed nation we have to become self-reliant with our own spirit and efforts," the vice president said.
However the vice president admitted that although a possibility to cooperate with other countries was still open, the important thing was that the nation should stand on its own capability.
"Self-reliance is not for today's interest only but for the future as well," the vice president said, adding that the Indonesian nation did not want to be despised by other countries in the future.
The vice president was nominated by Golkar Party as presidential candidate to pair with Wiranto in the upcoming July 8 presidential election to compete with two other presidential and vice presidential candidate pairs.
Of the three presidential and vice presidential candidate pairs, the Jusuf Kalla-Wiranto (JK-Win) duo has the largest central campaign team as it consists of 800 people.
General Election Commission (KPU) official Syamsulbahri said recently that the JK-Win ticket's campaign team was headed by Industry Minister Fahmi Idris and had Iskandar Mandji as secretary.
It further included the following other ministers : People's Welfare Coordinating Minister Aburizal Bakrie, Law and Human Rights Minister Andi Mattalatta and National Development Minister Paskah Suzetta. Also in the team were House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Agung laksono and National Resilience Institute (lemhanas) Governor Muladi.
