ANTAM'S FENI-3 TO OPERATE AGAIN IN AUGUST
Jakarta, June 11 (ANTARA) - PT Aneka Tambang (ANTAM) has predicted it would be able operate again its nickel processing plant (FeNi-3) next August, the company's secretary said.
FeNi-3 is expected to operate again next August after it underwent a repair and modification process since last May, PT ANTAM Corporate secretary Bimo Budi Satriyo said here on Thursday.
"Since in the middle of last May, the operation of FeNi-3 has been stopped for a repair and modification in order to optimize the factory's production process," Satriyo said.
The repair was carried out in connection with a suspected leakage on the furnace's wall on April 18, 2009.
He said that the company had to carry out modification because the FeNi-30 nickel factory was not able to produce maximally. "Therefore, we carry out the modification and repair of the leakage in the oven's wall.
"Kawasaki will do the two jobs," Satriyo said.
Kawasaki is the contractor which is responsible for the design, procurement and development of the nickel processing factory.
As a consequence of its guarantee, Kawasaki should be the party which has to do the repair and modification works, he said.
Satriyo said that it was the second time a leakage happened on the wall of the furnace. The operation of FeNi-3 which was designed to produce 14,000 tons of nickel per annum, turned out to be unable to produce in full capacity.
The Publicly-listed mining company said last month its net profit in the first quarter of 2009 plunged 87 percent to Rp90 billion from Rp675.39 billion in the same period last year.
The drop was chiefly caused by a decline in the prices and sales volume of nickel and bauxite in the first three months of 2009, Satriyo said in a press statement.
He said the company's net profit margin in the first quarter of 2009 fell to 3 percent from 32 percent a quarter earlier.
However, sales rose 26 percent to Rp2.64 trillion, fueled by an increase in gold and silver sales, he said. ***2***
