NUMBER OF FOREIGN TOURIST ARRIVALS IN RI UP 1.53 PCT

Jakarta, June 13 (ANTARA) - More than 1.893 million tourists visited Indonesia in the first four months of 2009, up 1.53 percent from the same period last year, a tourism official said.

The increase suggested that the Indonesian tourism industry was immune to the impact of the global financial crisis, Director General of Marketing at the Culture and Tourism Ministry Sapta Nirwandar said here on Friday.

In the meantime, tourism industries in a number of countries such as Singapore, Thailand and Japan had recorded negative growth, he said.

The number of tourist arrivals in Singapore fell to 401,951 (minus 11.8 percent) in the January-April 2009 period, in Thailand to 206,322 (minus 19.69 percent) in January 2009 and in Japan to 582,259 (minus 27.2 percent) in the January-March 2009 period, he said.

"We should thank God that amid the global economic crisis, the Indonesian tourism industry grew as expected," he said.

Given the tourist arrival growth figure in the first four months of 2009, he said, there was optimism that the country could achieve its tourist arrival target of 6.5 million for this year.

"To achieve the target of 6.5 million tourist arrivals in 2009, we will continue tactical and strategic promotional activities by among other things stepping up sales missions, selling low-cost tourism packages, and conducting media promotions," he said.
