DOMESTIC AIRLINES CONSIDERING RAISING FUEL SURCHARGES

Jakarta, June 13 (ANTARA) - A number of domestic airlines are considering raising their fuel surcharges now that global crude prices have reached US$70 a barrel.

"Despite the recent rise in global crude prices we have yet to (raise fuel surcharges) but we continue to study the possibility (of raising them)," Sriwijaya Air spokesperson Ruth Hanna Simatupang said.

Hanna said Sriwijaya Air still had a room to refrain from raising fuel surcharges.

She said the airline company still had adequate aviation turbine (avtur) fuel reserves for its fleet.

"What is more, there has been no information from PT Pertamina on a change in the price of avtur," she said.

She said Sriwijaya Air's current fuel surcharges remained the same as those of late last year, namely Rp270,000 for flights of more than two hours, Rp170,000 for flights of one hour to two hours, and Rp140,000 for flights of less than one hour.

Mandala Airlines spokesperson Trisia Megawati shared Hanna's view, saying Mandala always evaluated its fuel surcharges by considering global crude prices.

"But up to now the management of Mandala Airlines still has no plan to raise its fuel surcharges. If there is a change in avtur price in two weeks' time, a rise in fuel surcharges will be inevitable," she said.

Separately, on Friday, Lion Air President Director Edward Sirait said the airline company still had to wait for announcement from Pertamina to decide whether or not it would raise its fuel surcharges.

If the avtur price increased significantly, a rise in fuel surcharges would be inevitable, he said.

Earlier, Indonesian National Air Carrier Association (INACA) Secretary General Tengku Burhanuddin said national air carriers particularly those grouped in the association were still reluctant to raise fuel surcharges.

"None of our members plans to raise fuel surcharges in the near future. We must be careful in looking at the global crude prices which still have the opportunity to fluctuate," he said.
