For its part, English-language newspaper The Peninsula affirmed that the fifth edition of the Global Security Forum is currently being held in Qatar and it provides an opportunity for stakeholders to discuss and share the security challenges the world faces currently, as in recent times, the world has witnessed many challenges from war to spreading fake narratives through social media.
Under the headline "Addressing security challenges", the paper said that the forum offers a stage for academics, domain experts, government officials and other relevant parties to expand on their findings and exchange ideas and learnings.
Held under the theme of 'Reshaping the Global Order: Conflict, Crises, and Cooperation', the Global Security Forum include discussions on topics such as the global energy crisis and approaches to strengthening sustainable economies; great power competition, shaped by the war in Ukraine, and the role of the UN Security Council; the evolution of global terrorism and emerging threats; violent far-right extremist networks and financing; and the disinformation-terrorism nexus, it added.
The paper referred to HE Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani's speech at the inauguration of the conference in which HE highlighted the most prominent challenges facing the world at the level of regional and international security and the monopoly exercised over basic commodities as a result of wars and crises. Overcoming the security challenges need countries to work together, trust each other, and like His Excellency mentioned it depends on the ability of all countries to adhere to agree upon basic principles like justice, equality, solidarity, and the rejection of double standards.
The paper explained that in the last few years, world has seen a plethora of challenges, mostly manmade and a few natural disasters. Energy and food security was hit due to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, before that, COVID-19 pandemic wreaked havoc with the world order creating medicine and vaccine shortage, and economic pressure on poorer countries. Add to the mix, the problems caused by the climate crisis, as many countries are witnessing flooding or snowstorms never seen before, while others are facing extreme droughts and heat.
A conference like Global Security Forum will help overcome these crises by addressing the root causes and finding solutions. It will also need cooperation between countries on a regional and global level, The Peninsula concluded. (QNA)
