PRESIDENT ORDERS INVESTIGATION ON HELICOPTER CRASH

Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi, June 13 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has instructed the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) to make a consolidation toward main military equipment (Alutsista) and a thorough investigation into a helicopter crash in Bogor on Friday (June 12, 2009).

The head of state made the instruction on the sidelines of his electoral campaigning activity in Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi Province, here on Saturday.

"I have instructed TNI to make a total consolidation and at the same time to restrict flights of TNI airplanes without having to disturb main tasks such as patrol operation and cargo freight," the president said.

In addition to the consolidation, a through evaluation and investigation should be done like that had been done toward several civilian plane accidents two years ago, he said.

"I want this to be done thoroughly, not only on the causes of the accidents but also other aspects such as maintenance, training, education, and leadership," the head of state said.

He suggested an establishment of a special team such as those investigating the civilian plane accidents two years ago.

"I hope investigation and evaluation could become a preventive solution including regarding regulation in the TNI environment. This is the step taken by the government, and in the near future, we will now what kind of a solution we get," he said.

An Air Force Puma helicopter crashed at the Atang Sendjaya airbase in Bogor, West Java, on Friday killing two and injuring five of the seven servicemen on board.

The helicopter crashed only four days after a Bolkow BO-105 helicopter crashed in South Cianjur, West Java, on Monday (June 8, 2009).

In the meantime, House of Representatives (DPR)Speaker Agung Laksono recently urged the government to carry out auditing on the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI).

"We should not hesitate to do such thing on the military. The TNI must be open and transparent," the House speaker said in response to the crash of an Air Force Puma helicopter in West Java on Friday.
