DEMONSTRATION MARKS YUDHOYONO VISIT IN KENDARI
Kendari, Indonesia, June 13 (ANTARA) - A group of about 50 youths and students here Saturday staged a rally to express their objections to the presence of presidential candidate Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in Kendari.
Yudhoyono and his entourage arrived at Kendari's Wolter Mongonsidi airport at 11:30 local time to attend a dialogic campaign meeting in Southeast Sulawesi's provincial capital.
After gathering at Kendari's Mandonga traffic circle, the demonstrators listened to orations by some of their peers and then distributed pamphlets containing their views to passers-by.
"We resent the presence of the Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono-Boediono pair here because we reject them. They are neo-liberals who will sell out the country's resources," Asri, one of the demonstrators, said.
The Mandonga traffic circle lies in a bustling part of Kendari but not on the route taken by Yudhoyono to reach the venue of his dialogic campaign, namely the KONI Building which is about three kilometers from Mandonga traffic circle.
After realizing Yudhoyono would not see their street action, the demonstrators eventually left the Mandonga traffic circle and marched in the direction of the KONI Building. However, they met with a police force that blocked their way and forced them to turn back.
In a scuffle with the police, one of the demonstrators was arrested but later released.
Yudhoyono's retinue included his wife, Ani Yudhoyono, son Edi Bagaskoro, Democratic Party (PD) chairman Hadi Utomo, presidential spokesmen Andi Malarangeng and Dino Pati Jalal. Also in the party were Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) President Tifatul Sembiring, Nation's Awakening Party (PKB) chairman Muhaimin Iskandar, and a senior member of Yudhoyono's success team, former National Defense Forces (TNI) commander Joko Suyanto. ***
