PRESIDENT HOPES BALI TO BECOME ENGINE OF CREATIVE INDUSTRY

Denpasar, June 13 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono expressed hope here on Saturday that Bali could become the engine of development of the country's creative industry.

Speaking at the opening of the 31st Bali Arts Festival, he said in the future the national economy must not only rely on agriculture, industry and services but also on creative industry.

"I have great hope for Bali to continue to become the engine and center of the development of tourism and creative industry, including its culture which is known to have extraordinary qualities," he said.

He said Bali had not only become the pride of the Balinese and Indonesians but also of the world.

Bali had so far become the center of world attention and in the future its position could be strengthened to become a center of tourism and culture, creativity and also the world's inter-cultural bridge.

On the occasion, President Yudhoyono also expressed amazement over the Balinese creativity and arts and culture development.

"From year to year, when I watch various traditional parade attractions and dances, I am always amazed by their high qualities and creativity," he said.

"Every year, I see a different creativity, attractions and moral messages. This really makes us proud," he said.

The governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, said the festival from June 13 to July 11 was aimed at developing existing traditional arts and revitalizing them so that they remained functional and alive in the modern society.

The festival presents 180 kinds of art productions involving more than 14,000 Balinese artists and those from 12 other provinces in the country and nine representatives from abroad such as Japan, the US and Mexico.
