RI, MALAYSIA TO REVIEW MANPOWER COOPERATION ACCORD
Jakarta, June 13 (ANTARA) - Indonesian and Malaysian government representatives are to meet in mid-July to rediscuss the substance of a 2005 bilateral manpower cooperation agreement in light of the frequent instances of abuse Indonesian workers experience in Malaysia.
"We plan to meet with the Malaysian side on July 15 to rediscuss the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) of 2005 on manpower cooperation," I Gusti Made Arta, director general for manpower management and placement at the manpower and tranmsigration ministry, said here Saturday.
He said there was great concern on the Indonesian side about the many cases of violence against Indonesian workers that had happened in Malaysia. The latest one involved house helper Siti Hajar who was tortured and denied her salary for many months by her Malasyian employer in Kuala Lumpur.
At the planned meeting, Malaysia would be represented by officials of its ministries of home affairs and of human resources, and Indonesia by officials of its ministries of manpower and transmigration, of home affairs and of law and human rights.
The topics to be discussed at the meeting between the representatives of the two governments would be : review of the work contracts of Indonesian workers in Malaysia, safety guarantees and insurance for the Indonesian workers, and other matters agreed on in the 2005 MoU.
"Everyting in the MoU relating to the placement of Indonesian workers in Malaysia will be reviewed," Made Arta said.
About the Siti Hajar case which happened on Monday (June 8), he said it was now all settled. Siti's employer was detained and had declared her readiness to pay all of Siti's medical treatment and rehabilitation bills, her oustanding salary and insurance money.
