GOVT FORMS TEAM TO AUDIT MILITARY ARMAMENT SYSTEM

Jakarta, June 15 (ANTARA) - The government has decided to form a team to audit the Indonesian military's main defense equipment to check the armaments' budget and technical aspects following the recent occurrence of military aircraft accidents, a minister said.

"I myself have set up an auditing team on the budget of the defense ministry, the Indonesian National Defense Forces (TNI) Headquarters, the Air Force, Army and Naval Inspectorate Generals, to jointly evaluate thoroughly the training and technical aspects of the TNI's alutsista," Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono said after a meeting with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the presidential office, here on Monday.

TNI Chief General Djoko Santoso also attended the meeting.

The defense budget auditing team would be set up to follow up an instruction from President Yudhoyono to make a comprehensive evaluation and total consolidation towards development and technical management of all of the TNI's military hardware.

The minister said the budget auditing was needed to implement technical and management steps which were necessary to prevent accidents due to technical factors, until it reached zero tolerance, he said.

"I will in the very near future sign a document on the establishment of the defense budget auditing team covering the defense ministry, the TNI HQ, and the Army, Air Force, and Naval HQs. They will begin to work tomorrow (Tuesday, June 16) until the end of July," he said.

Meanwhile, TNI Chief General Djoko Santoso said the military hardware auditing would be conducted by a team to be led by TNI Inspector General Lt. Gen. Lilik AS.

In line with the president's instruction, the defense minister and the TNI Chief would follow up technical evaluation both concerning flight operational and maintenance, he said.

The evaluation would also cover regulations on flight operations and maintenance; education and training of crew members to check their skills; leadership and management; and budget, he said.

The evaluation would be based on five parameters and the comprehensive results would be reported to the defense minister and the president, he said. ***
