RP4 TRILLION NEEDED TO HOLD 2nd ROUND OF PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

Jakarta, June 15 (ANTARA) - The General Elections Commission (KPU) will need around Rp4 trillion in funds to hold a second round of the upcoming presidential election, KPU Secretary General Suripto Bambang Setyadi said here on Monday.

Of the amount, Rp1.2 trillion could be obtained from what had been saved on the KPU's expenditures to hold the recent legislative elections and what could be saved on the cost of the forthcoming presidential election in one round.

Another Rp2.8 trillion could be taken from what provincial and district election commissions had saved through efficiency measures, Setyadi said.

But if the saved funds proved not to be enough, the KPU would ask for additional funds from the government, he added.

Therefore, he said, he would invite the provincial and district KPU secretaries general to a meeting on June 16-18 to report the realization of the funds.

"We need to ask all provincial working units to find out how much of their funds has been saved and how much we can absorb from the funds platform," Setyadi said after a working meeting of the KPU secretariat general.

The meeting was held to draw up the budget for a second phase of the presidential election which would have to take place on September 8, 2009.

But Setyadi also said he had yet to estimate how much the provincial, district and municipal elections commissions had in reality saved.

"We hope Rp 2.8 trillion can be obtained from the provincial and district election commissions for a second phase of the presidential election," he said, adding that if it was not enough, he would ask for additional funds from the State Budget.

Commenting of election logistics, he said as per Monday, June 15, 2009, as many as 65 million or 38 percent of a total of 160 million ballot papers needed for the July 8 election had yet to be printed, but 115.51 million or 64 percent of the needed ballot papers had already been printed.

He said the printing of the remaining ballot papers for the July 8 presidential election would be completed on Tuesday, and the distribution to districts and municipalities across the country would be completed on June 25, 2009.

"We hope the distribution of all election logistics will be completed on June 25, 2009," Setyadi said.

According to a report to the election logistics procurement committee, seven of the 18 printing companies contracted to do the printing had fulfilled their orders. ***
