BOEDIONO REMINDS BRI OF ITS ROLE AS RURAL BANK

Jakarta, June 15 (ANTARA)- Vice presidential candidate Boediono has reminded state-owned Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) not to forget its role as a bank focusing on rural financing.

"I don't promise that I will set up a special bank (for farmers and fishermen). But, it would be better if we could optimize the function of state own banks such as BRI to sharpen its mission in financing for farmers and fishermen," Boediono said here on Monday in an electoral campaign dialog with the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN).

The vice presidential aspirant made the statement in response to a suggestion by businessman Peter F Gontha on the possibility of reestablishing the Farmers' and Fishermen's Bank which had been merged with BRI.

Meanwhile, Boediono also reminded the banking industry to return to its role as an intermediation institution, especially following the global economic crisis.

"Banks must go back to basic, and finance the real sector's activities," he said.

The former governor of Bank Indonesia (BI, the country's central bank) said many banks had been active in the capital market when the global financial crisis occurred.

"If banks want to be in the capital market, they should first now the rules and the risks clearly," he said.

The presidential elections will be held on July 8, 2009. The General Elections Commission (KPU) has set schedules for closed door campaigning from June 2 to 10, and mass rallies from June 11 to July 4, 2009.

Incumbent Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono of the Democratic Party (PD) pairs with Boediono, and is competing with other candidates, namely Jusuf Kalla and his running mate retired General Wiranto, as well as with former president Megawati Soekarnoputri and Prabowo in the upcoming presidential race.

Boediono started his electoral campaigning activities by visiting the Larangan Market in Sidoarjo District, East Java last Thursday (June 11). ***
