Qatari Newspapers Editorials
Doha, May 14 (QNA) - Qatari newspapers dealt in their editorials on Sunday with the ceasefire agreement reached by the Palestinian resistance factions and the Israeli government, ending five days of brutal aggression on Gaza Strip.
The Qatari dailies underlined that no one can break the will of the Palestinian people who cling to their right to liberate their land and establish the Palestinian state on the borders of June 1967 with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.
On the other hand, the newspapers highlighted the visit of HE Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani to Kandahar in Afghanistan, and his meeting with Prime Minister in the caretaker government of Afghanistan Mohammad Hasan Akhund, within the framework of the State of Qatar's endeavors and firm commitment to supporting the Afghan people.
Al-Raya said that a new round of the Israeli aggression has ended with the occupation entity compelled to accept a truce with the Palestinian resistance, learning once again that it will never be able to break the will of the Palestinian people who cling to their right to liberate their land and establish the Palestinian state on the borders of June 1967 with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.
The occupation does not hesitate to use internationally prohibited weapons to target the Palestinians, killing dozens of them including women and children, Al-Raya added; calling on the international community to take urgent measures to stop the Israeli attacks on the Palestinian people and Al-Aqsa Mosque in a flagrant violation of the provisions of international law and human rights charters.
Al-Raya underlined that the Qatari position on the Palestinian issue will remain steadfast and will not change under any circumstances, because the Israeli occupation forces practice ethnic cleansing against the Palestinians, and are committing war crimes as the indiscriminate bombing of Gaza Strip claimed the lives of civilians, including women and children, which is a criminal attack that is condemned and rejected and contributes to exacerbating the situation.
Meanwhile, Qatari daily Al-Sharq said that the Palestinian resistance factions and the government of the Israeli entity reached a ceasefire agreement, five days after the brutal Israeli aggression on Gaza Strip claimed the lives of 34 Palestinians, injured nearly 150 Palestinians, caused total destruction of 51 housing units, and damaged about 1,000 housing units.
The consequences of this brutal aggression reflected the retaliatory nature of the attacks launched by the Israeli entity, which contradicts international laws, especially the Geneva Convention (IV) relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War, Al-Sharq added.
Enhancing the steadfastness of the Palestinian people in the face of the continuous Israeli aggression must be a priority for the Arab and Islamic nation, including providing all forms of support to the Palestinians and strengthening the diplomatic action to prevent the recurrence of such crimes and put pressure on the international community to hold the perpetrators accountable, Al-Sharq concluded.
In its editorial, Al-Watan daily said that the new crime committed by the Israeli occupation forces in Balata camp east of Nablus on Saturday morning, killing two Palestinian youths and injuring others, clearly indicates that the Israeli war targets all spectrums of the Palestinian people, not just the Islamic Jihad and Hamas movements.
The paper added that the occupation's attempt to portray what is happening as a battle against extremism involves deception, as its aim is to give the international community a justification to gain its support, or at least its silence. The paper stressed that the truth is that the occupation forces are trying to liquidate the entire Palestinian cause.
The newspaper called for urgent and decisive international intervention through the Security Council, and held the US administration an important part of the responsibility for the deterioration of the situation, as a result of the silence on the Israeli crimes and the lack of immediate intervention to stop them.
In conclusion, Al-Watan said that the continuation of these conditions cannot be accepted, nor can the daily killing of the Palestinian people be accepted, as these crimes must stop by pushing for comprehensive peace negotiations aimed at implementing the resolutions of international legitimacy without delay.
Regarding the Qatari support for the Afghan people, Al-Arab newspaper said in its editorial that HE Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani's visit to the city of Kandahar in Afghanistan, and his meeting with Prime Minister in the caretaker government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Mohammad Hasan Akhund, came within the framework of the State of Qatar's endeavors and firm commitment to provide support and stand by the Afghan people, and also reflects the strong commitment of the State of Qatar to stand by the Afghan people and its continued efforts to achieve security, stability, prosperity and a decent life in Afghanistan.
The paper underlined that the constructive involvement of the State of Qatar in Afghanistan is represented in implementing the goals and references of its foreign policy, which is based on mediation-based preventive diplomacy approach, resolving regional and international disputes through dialogue and negotiation, and helping the Afghan people to achieve freedom, peace and development, in addition to strengthening regional and international security and stability.
The paper indicated that over many years, the State of Qatar made strenuous diplomatic and political efforts, within the framework of facilitating negotiations between the local and international warring parties to end the war in Afghanistan, which resulted in reaching the joint declaration between the United States and the Taliban to establish peace in Afghanistan in February 2020 which was welcomed by the Security Council.
Al-Arab concluded by saying that there is no need to recall the State of Qatar's supportive stance towards the Afghan people in order for them to obtain all their rights, foremost of which is the right to education, especially for girls, and respect for women's right to work. Qatar has also contributed to facilitating the implementation of one of the largest evacuations in the country in recent history, as it evacuated 80,000 people from Afghanistan, and provided them with support in Doha during their temporary stay, including shelter and health care. The State of Qatar has also announced USD 25 Million Pledge to Support Humanitarian Response in Afghanistan at the Pledging Event on Supporting the Humanitarian Response in Afghanistan, which was organized by the State of Qatar in partnership with the United Nations and international partners, in order to alleviate the suffering of Afghans.
English-language newspaper The Peninsula highlighted the State of Qatar's hosting of the AFC Asian Cup 2023 and the draw for the tournament finals that took place a few days ago, adding that Qatar that has unarguably become the world's sports capital after delivering blockbuster events over the years will stage the continental showpiece from Jan. 12 to Feb. 10, 2024
In its editorial under the headline "Great expectations", the paper said that representatives of the 24 competing sides including the team coaches who attended the Draw at the Katara Opera House were expecting Qatar to host Asia's premier tournament in a spectacular fashion, noting that Qatar will become the first nation to host the tournament three times having hosted the 1988 and 2011 editions.
Boasting state-of-the-art infrastructure and rich experience in organising major events, Qatar is expected to set new benchmarks in hosting of the competition's history, the paper said, pointing out that the participating teams and the visiting fans are set to experience the same top-notch facilities which were offered during the World Cup.
The paper said that all eyes are now on the opening ceremony which will be held at 68,895-capacity Al Bayt Stadium before tournament's inaugural match between Group A teams – hosts and holders Qatar and Lebanon – on Jan. 12, 2024.
In conclusion, The Peninsula said that AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023 CEO Jassim Al Jassim has vowed Local Organising Committee (LOC) will do its best to take the World Cup legacy forward by organising a fantastic edition of the tournament. He said Qatar has best venues, infrastructure and organisational skills to deliver a memorable event, hoping the country will live up to great expectations of all stakeholders. (QNA)
