EARTHQUAKE JOLTS CILACAP EARLY THURSDAY



Cilacap, Central Java, June 18 (ANTARA) - An earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale jolted Cilacap on Thursday at 2.42 am local time, information of the Cilacap meteorological station said here on Thursday.

The earthquake's epicenter was located at 8.11 degrees southern latitude, and 108.58 degrees eastern longitude, around 63 km southwest of Cilacap, at at depth of 19 km below sea level, Teguh Wardowo of the local meteorological office, said.

The temblor did not have potential to trigger a subsequent tsunami, he said.

Meanwhile, an earthquake measuring 5.7 on Richter scale shook Sumbawa Besar, West Nusa Tenggara at 10.36 a.m last Sunday (June 14), according to he Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

The BMKG office said that the epicenter of the quake was located 7.74 degrees southern latitude and 117.23 degrees eastern longitude, about 87 km north west of Sumbawa Besar, West Nusa Tenggara, at a depth of about 35 km.

Earlier at 8.30 am on the same day, an earthquake measuring at 5.1 on the Richter scale shook the southern stretches of West Java province.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency in Jakarta said the tremor's epicenter was located southwest of Tasikmalaya, West Java, at a depth of 10 kilometers.

On Saturday, an earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale also jolted Ambon, Maluku Province, at 3.46 am Western Indonesian Standard Time (WIB).

The temblor's epicenter was located at 5.43 degrees southern latitude, and 128.07 degrees eastern longitude, around 200 km southwest of Ambon, at a depth of 343 km below sea level, the national meteorological and geophysics office said here on Friday.

Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago, sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," the edge of a tectonic plate prone to seismic upheaval.

In December 2004, a 8.9-magnitude earthquake hit Aceh (northern Sumatra) and Nias Island (North Sumatra Province) and triggered a deadly tsunami which devastated the two affected areas and killed around 200,000 people.
