HEALTH MINISTRY TO PREPARE ROADMAP TO FACE CLIMATE CHANGE
Jakarta, June 18 (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Health will prepare a roadmap in the face of the impact of climate change on public health, a health official said.
Director for Environment Sanitation of the Ministry of Health, Wan Alkadri said here on Thursday the raodmap was recommended by a seminar on the impact of climate change on health.
The health official said that the roadmap on the impact of climate change on public health would be included in the government's short-term development plan for the 2010-2015 period.
He said the steps to be taken with regard to the roadmap included increasing the capacity of Indonesia's public health system in the framework of adaptation to climate change.
"The capacity of Indonesia's public health system will be increased by organizing a training program and the production of modules to protect public health from the impact of climate change," he said.
Alkadri said that the people would directly feel the impact of climate change, and therefore efforts to increase the capacity of the public health system would be carried out in line with the empowerment of the people.
According to the health ministry official, efforts to increase the capacity of the public health system should also be based on science, analysis, research and data inventory from all related agencies.
He said decision makers, legislators, academics and various other organizations outside the health sector needed to increase their awareness of the impact of climate change on public health.
"We hope the roadmap will be applied by decision makers beginning from the president down to governors, mayors, district heads and so on," he said.
Other sectors such as the climatological, meteorological and geophysical office, forestry, transportation, industry, environment agency and other non-health sectors, need to take active part, he said.***
