ILC COMMENDS RI FOR PREVENTING MASS WORKER LAYOFFS

Jakarta, June 18 (ANTARA) - The International labor Conference (ILC) held in Geneva earlier this month has commended Indonesia for having successfully prevented mass worker layoffs amid the global financial crisis, a minister said.

"During the conference, Indonesia was considered successful in carrying out various programs to overcome the impact of the global crisis so that it was able to prevent mass layoffs," Manpower Minister Eman Suparno said here on Thursday.

The minister had just returned from Geneva where he attended the 98th ILC meeting from June 2 to 19, 2009.

Because it was considered successful, Indonesia was asked to become a panelist at the conference and to explain its steps in facing the global crisis, he said.

Among the steps taken by the government were providing fiscal stimulus packages, holding social dialogs, providing vocational training and developing entrepreneurship.

Besides, the government also offered green jobs for those who were laid off. The minister also stressed the importance of international cooperation in facing the global crisis.

The minister said during the conference he also stressed the importance of dialogs among countries sending migrant workers and those receiving them in an effort to reduce migrant workers problems.

He said the ILC also discussed the instruments and agenda of the International Labor Organization (ILO) with regard to HIV/AIDS issues in the world of employment.

On the sidelines of the conference, Minister Suparno also held a meeting with the ILO director general, Juan Somavia. The minister suggested that the number of Indonesian representatives working with the ILO be increased.

Suparno also met with his Malaysian counterpart to discuss a plan to organize an induction training for migrant workers in Malaysia. He suggested that the plan be discussed by a Joint Group which was set up with a memorandum of understanding.

In an effort to overcome the labor crisis, the ILO will draw up a global employment pact as an umbrella of cooperation and exchange of information as well as a basis for good steps in enhancing job opportunities. ***3***
