U.S. Thanks Saudi Arabia for Hosting Talks Between Sudan’s Armed Forces, RSF
Washington, October 31, 2023, SPA -- The United States thanked Saudi Arabia for hosting talks between representatives of Sudan’s Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary in Jeddah.
“We thank the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for hosting the talks and welcome the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), which is also participating on behalf of the African Union, as a co-facilitator,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said in a statement.
The ceasefire talks, reconvened by the United States, Saudi Arabia, and IGAD, discussed the objectives of facilitating the delivery of humanitarian aid, establishing ceasefires, taking confidence-building measures, and working on achieving permanent cessation of hostilities.
The talks are consistent with the Jeddah Declaration of Commitment to Protect the Civilians of Sudan, signed May 11, the statement said.
Miller called for the conflicting parties to approach the talks constructively, highlighting the necessity of saving lives, minimizing the fighting, and creating a path to end the conflict through negotiations.
Miller also reiterated the U.S. call for all external parties to avoid fueling the conflict.
“The time has come to stop the senseless violence, resume civilian governance, and let the people of Sudan achieve their demands for freedom, peace, and justice,” Miller added.
