JK-WIN TEAM`S SPOKESMAN : BIN SHOULD REMAIN NEUTRAL

Jakarta, June 23 (ANTARA) - The National Intelligence Agency (BIN) should be neutral in the upcoming presidential race , Yuddy Chrisnandi, a spokesman of the Jusuf Kalla-Wiranto success team, said here on Tuesday.

"An official intelligence institution should not be involved, it should remain neutral," Chrisnandi said here on Tuesday.

He admitted that there was currently a war of intelligence among the presidential candidates. But the important thing was that the country's intelligence services should not be involved in the game.

"BIN must keep its (neutral) position in the interest of the state, and not in the interest of any of the presidential candidates," he said.

Prabowo, a vice presidential candidate who pairs with presidential hopeful Megawati Soekarnoputri, recently, also urged BIN to be neutral in the upcoming presidential poll.

Indonesia will hold its second direct presidential election on July 8, 2009.

Meanwhile, last Thursday (June 18), As'ad Said Ali, BIN deputy chief, said BIN kept a neutral stance in the upcoming presidential election.

"We have all along always been neutral. Indeed someone has said that BI is not neutral, but it's just a perception," he said after launching his new book at Wisma ANTARA.

No BIN official was involved in the campaigning activity of any of the presidential or vice presidential candidates, he said.

"BIN is loyal to the state, not to a certain party's interest," the BIN official, who had been assigned in a number of Arab countries, said.

He admitted that BIN's intelligence personnel were indeed present in institutions organizing the upcoming presidential elections, for security reasons.

"It's for security because we have been asked by the General Elections Commission to help," he said.

BIN very much respected the democratic process and therefore it did not want to be involved in electoral campaigns, he said.

No presidential candidate had asked for BIN's support, he said. ***
